Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, also known as PBJ, was first sold at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. People went crazy for its sweet and savory combination. From then on, PBJ has become an icon of the American culture and has quickly spread around the world. On average, a regular American will have consumed 1500 PBJs when they have graduated high school. Owing to its sweet and savory taste, it has the power to smooth a troubled mind and win a spot in this Top 5 list.

There are only a few foods that will comfort both adults and children when they are feeling down. Ice Cream is one of those foods! The concept of ice cream dates as far back as the 2nd century B.C. It was said that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow that was flavored with honey and nectar. The first modern ice cream was introduced to the public in 1660. However, ice cream was not made popular until the late 18th century and the early 19th century. To this day we can see a box of ice cream in every household soothing the minds of many. Not to mention, caring for many a break up.

What better way to ease your mind than with a slice of a piping hot pizza. Pizza is so popular nowadays that most people think pizza actually originates from Italy. The pizza we are familiar with today is a variation of it, created by an Italian baker named Raffaele Esposito. You can find pizza stores everywhere, so why don't you treat yourself with a slice of pizza and excite every taste-bud.

Macaroni and cheese is another American classic to be named as one of the best comfort foods. Although the origin of macaroni(mac) and cheese is unclear, most food historians agree upon that the first mac and cheese originates from Italy. The Liber de Coquina is a 13th century Italian cook book most commonly known as the Book of Cooking, it has a recipe which tells us about dish that very much resembles the mac and cheese that we know and love today. In 1937, Kraft Foods introduced the instant version of mac and cheese. This made making mac and cheese a simple task for adults, and since then people can't say no to such a mesmerizing treat.

Considered as one of the world's greatest comfort foods, grilled cheese has the power to comfort the soul of most people. Like most comfort foods, the origin of the grilled cheese is not clearly documented. However, most food historians can agree that circa 1920 a man in the U.S came up with the brilliant idea to grill the combination of cheese and bread. One of the reasons for its popularity is that you can acquire the ingredients easily. You can buy any toast-able bread and cheese in most grocery stores. The key to a good grilled cheese sandwich is the cheese, not only is the quality important but the variety as well.
